S&S is an independent publishing house that focuses on upmarket fiction, narrative non-fiction and children’s literature. Our selection of books includes both Finnish and translated literature, and we publish around 50 books a year. In every genre we cherish high quality and current issues. We love books that leave their readers delighted, inspired or impressed. Each book on our list is carefully chosen. It is important for us to publish beautifully designed, well-written and thoughtfully translated books.
Our list includes translations of Rachel Cusk, Tove Ditlevsen, Lauren Groff, Hannah Gadsby, Jamaica Kincaid, Deborah Levy, Maggie Nelson, Maggie O’Farrell and Ocean Vuong.
Our domestic titles have been awarded with Finland’s biggest literary prizes, e.g. the Finlandia Junior Prize in 2022 for Kirahvin sydän on tavattoman suuri (A Giraffe’s Heart is Unbelievably Large) by Sofia and Amanda Chanfreau, in 2020 for Radio Popov by Anja Portin and in 2017 for Avain hukassa (The Lost Key) by Sanna Mander. Susanna Hast was awarded The Helsingin Sanomat Debutant Prize in 2022 for Ruumis/huoneet (Body of Evidence) and Marisha Rasi Koskinen The Runeberg Prize in 2021 for her novel REC.
Kustantamo S&S is part of Schildts & Söderströms Publishers, a Finland-Swedish publishing house. We have our roots solidly in the ground: Schildts was established in 1913, and Söderströms in 1891. The two companies merged in 2012.
